Well it was a rainy end to our week but a productive one! Here's the breakdown of the week by class.
Biology
We viewed our pond cultures again today and the egg cultures were definitely the winner! I may give these cultures a few more days to grow and pull them out again on Monday and see if we can see some of our protozoa on a larger scale. The ones we saw today were quite small! We were able to see a few Euglena and some Paramecium, however.
Please finish reading Module 3 next week and complete the OYO questions and vocabulary lists. We will have a short test on Modules 1-3 on Wednesday. Please have your notebooks up to date!
Chemistry
I returned the chemistry tests and gave the quizzes on the first 20 of the periodic table. The grades were fairly good but we do need to buckle down some. Remember to always label your answer with the correct unit!
Our experiment today showed helped to highlight the difference between covalent and ionic compounds in a tangible way.
Read to p. 113 in Module 4 for next week and complete the OYO questions. Our lab time on Wednesday will be very busy so please come prepared - that means read over our experiments before you come! We will be doing Exp. 4.1 and 4.2 in class. Steps 1 & 8 of Exp. 4.2 will need to be done at home before you come!! Make sure your lab notebooks are up to date!
Adv.Biology
We used our skeletal models today to help solidify our memorization of the skeletal system. Many thanks to Shelby's family for letting us borrow "Stinky". We also have "Steve" and "Bonita", our smaller models to assist us. There were quite a few coloring exercises for us to do this week so we did not get them all finished. Please try to go through these at home. The drawings of the cranial bones are quite good and will really help with your memorization.
For next week, read Module 4 to p. 110 and complete the OYO questions and vocabulary listing. We will do Exp. 4.2 in class but Exp. 4.1 will need to be done at home!
Have a great weekend!

Week 4
Well, week 4 is finished and we are nicely settled in. Everyone worked hard this week and I was pleased with the progress we made in all the classes.
Biology
Today we made slides from pond cultures. We saw good bacterial growth and some amoebas and diatoms, but no other live protozoa. You should finish your lab report including your hypothesis as to which culture would produce the most organisms.
Read to p. 82 in Module 3 making sure to complete the "OYO" and vocabulary list. We will be doing part 2 of our pond cultures hoping to see algae and protozoa.
Chemistry
This week we spent doing quite a bit of review of Modules 1 &2 before briefly touching on Module 3. I gave a test today and I will return those to you on Monday. Good news - no lab write-up!
Finish the reading on Module 3, completing the "OYO" questions. Work on memorizing the 1st twenty elements of the periodic table by name, atomic number and abbreviation. You should also be able to fill those first 20 in on a blank chart. Your quiz on that will be on Wednesday. We will also be completing Exp. 3.2 on Wednesday.
Advanced Biology
We went over the first half of Module 3 this week and completed Exp. 3.1 and 3.2 in class. The coloring exercises are very detailed and will need to be finished at home if they were not in class.
Finish reading Module 3 to the end and complete the "OYO" questions. We will be working with our models and completing Coloring exercises 3.2 - 3.6 in class. They should be easier than today's exercises.
If you missed a day this week then just go by the syllabus to know your assignment. If you missed a test, then I will be mailing it to you. Please try and bring it back to class with you.
Have a great weekend!

Week 3
It was a shorter week but we managed to pack a lot in today! Please remember to keep up with your reading and keep your notebooks up to date!
Biology
Today we viewed bacterial slides in preparation for our pond cultures next week. For Monday, read Module 2 to the end and answer the "OYO" questions and keep up with your vocabulary. For Wednesday, make sure you read over the experiment 2.1 so we can get started right away!
Chemistry
Today was a more complex lab (2 labs actually) that took several steps as we worked to calibrate our thermometers then we worked to calculate the specific heat of an unknown metal. Make sure you are reading over the labs we will be doing before coming to class so that you know what to expect. And I'll know to purchase ice in the future!!! I will be sending out an email individually to the students with sample data to help them through the calculations. Please try and work through them the best you can! We will go over the calculations as a group on Monday!
For Monday, you need to read Module 3 to p. 82 stopping before the Law of Multiple Proportions. We will also have a short test on Monday on Modules 1 & 2. We will be completing experiment 3.1 on Wednesday.
Advanced Biology
Today we finished out Module 2 and took a short test. I will have those graded and back to you on Monday. Read to p. 72 for Monday and do the "OYO" questions. We will be doing Lab 3.1 and 3.2 on Wednesday as well as the coloring exercise 3.1. Please make sure you bring your coloring books (sounds like preschool, huh!) with you each Wednesday. I know it's one more large book for your backpack but it will really help us with our identification!
I believe that's all for now! As always, I am available for questions if you have them!
Thanks for being such amazing students!
